The Australian National Rugby League (NRL) competition emerged from the ashes after both the newly formed SuperLeague and previous ARL competitions started to show that the country could not sustain two premier competitions, combined crowds were down, and Rugby League was suffering. The NRL was formed as a joint venture of the ARL and News Corp. The combined competition started to mend the game, but with a lot of contention.
