 Awen Guttenbeil
Age: 48
D.O.B: 14 March 1976
Place of Birth: Whangarei
Former Clubs: Manly
Weight: 100 kg
Height: 188 cm
Position: 9. Hooker
Spent much of his career alongside Stacey Jones. Both came out of the City-Point Chevalier club, they've developed a telepathic understanding as a devastating duo on the right side of the ruck; unfortunately, Guttenbeil's dreadful luck with injury has ensured the combination is seen far too rarely. Guttenbeil has the quality to be as important to the Warriors as his little mate but he just doesn't have the good fortune. Nabbed by Manly as a teenager, he had valuable exposure there, especially at President's Cup level. Came home in 1996 for what's been a wretched career with the Warriors. John Monie used him 14 times that season, five times in the run-on side. He still qualified for the club's reserve grade side but was denied the chance of playing in that grade's grand final in September - by injury! That also cost him selection in the Kiwi squad to face Papua New Guinea and Great Britain. Injuries restricted Guttenbeil to just four appearances in 1997 and only 10 in 1998. It seemed he was at last set in 1999 when he exploded with a compelling display against Sydney City. He was producing more of the same against Norths when he cruelly broke his ankle and made just one more appearance in the last game of the year. In the off season, still more injury trouble struck ensuring 2000 will also be an interrupted season.
